Silent Valley National Park is one of the most fascinating forests stretching down south in the Western Ghats. The place is very popular for protecting endangered species like the Lion-Tailed Macaques and the Nilgiri Tahr. Are you planning to visit this dense, lush green rainforest soon? About Silent Valley National Park in Kerala

The Silent Valley National Park is the last stretch of the tropical rainforests in the Western Ghats region that remain undisturbed to date. The park represents the core of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserves and shares its borders with Mannarkhad Taluk of Palakkad district in Kerala, Nilambur Taluk of Malappuram district in Kerala and Nilgiri district of Tamil Nadu. It is a part of the Nilgiri hills that extends both into Kerala and Tamil Nadu. The park has an area of 89.52 km2 with a buffer zone of 148 km2

All admirers of the Nilgiri mountain ranges must explore these spectacular Munnar tourist places that are sure to leave you spellbound.

History and establishment

The first person to investigate the park area along with its watersheds was Robert Wight, a botanist from 1857. It is said that he named the place ‘Silent Valley’ because it was devoid of the noisy cicadas and remained more or less quiet. However, there’s a section that believes that the name had no significant backstory and was given to the park only to convert the local terms associated with the local Sairandhri region to English. The park is home to the Lion-Tailed Macaques whose scientific name is Macaca silenus. The name could have also been derived from the species name of this animal.

It was in 1914 that the area was declared a reserve forest. Between 1927 and 1976, several forestry operations were conducted here. In 1928, the authorities found that the location near the Kunti River, a waterbody that passes through the national park, was ideal for electricity generation. In 1958, a study was conducted and a project worth 17 crore rupees was proposed. They discussed the possibility of establishing a Hydropower plant in the region.

However, the locals were strictly against it. In the 1970s, the ‘Save Silent Valley’ movement became popular as the people protested against the felling of trees and the disturbance to the wildlife just to establish a Hydropower plant. The government had to bow its head to their efforts and eventually in 1980, the area was declared a national park and in 1985, it was officially inaugurated.

Another spectacular tourist destination in the Nilgiri mountains is Ooty. Know when is the best time to visit Ooty and set out on a vacation that is absolutely refreshing.

What to spot in Silent Valley National Park?

When you visit the Silent Valley National Park, you will find animals like herds of elephants, leopards, tigers and the Indian gaur relaxing or roaming around the evergreen forest. Apart from these, there are some unique endemic species of animals that are special and will be found in greater density at this national park.

1 – Lion Tailed Macaques

The Lion-Tailed Macaques have a black furry body with a distinct silver-white mane surrounding their face, something that resembles the name of a lion.

The Silent Valley National Park intends to preserve the endangered population of these primates. Lion-Tailed Macaques are arboreal and prefer to stay on trees. Though they are shy and reserved, they are also curious. So, you can easily spot them on the fruiting trees of the dense forest canopy.

2 – Nilgiri Tahr

Nilgiri Tahr is a unique mountain goat that is endemic to the Nilgiris and the Western Ghats in general. They have a stocky build, short and coarse fur along with curved horns.

3 – Nilgiri Langur

The Nilgiri Langurs are black-furred monkeys with a golden-brown crown of fur on their heads. They usually travel in groups and are social animals, not just with their peers but with anyone who approaches them.

5 – Torrent Toad

The Torrent Toad is an amphibian that you will find in the fast-flowing stream of the Kunthi River that flows through the evergreen forest of Silent Valley National Park.

This toad clings to the surfaces of wet rocks in turbulent waters and this happens because of its toe pads. They are red in colour and prefer to stay in the shaded parts of the forest.

6 – Small Travancore Flying Squirrel

The first thing you need to notice to distinguish the flying squirrel from the giant squirrel is their size. The Small Travancore Flying Squirrel has a small, reddish brown body and the colour is a few shades lighter underneath. It is a nocturnal mammal and is very agile, gliding between trees with the help of a membrane called a patagium that stretches between its limbs.

Cultural and tribal heritage

Silent Valley National Park is not only a safe haven for the flora and fauna of the place but also offers shelter to the indigenous tribes of the region who use the forest resources for their livelihood. The Irula people are one of the major indigenous communities living around Silent Valley. They are traditionally hunter-gatherers and have a deep understanding of the forest, its plants, and wildlife. The Irulas have been closely linked with the land, relying on the forest for food, medicine, and shelter. The Kurumba tribe also stays within the vicinity of the Silent Valley National Park. They have very good knowledge in herbal medicine and know how to utilise the forest resources to their full potential. Kurumba tribals are splendid artists who can make handicrafts like beadwork, basket weaving and creative art that is inspired by their surroundings. They pass down their generation’s worth of knowledge to their next of kin to ensure that the priceless information doesn’t slip through the grooves of time.

Silent Valley National Park is not only a safe haven for the flora and fauna of the place but also offers shelter to the indigenous tribes of the region who use the forest resources for their livelihood.

From its culinary delicacies to the interesting tourist hotspots, everything about ‘God’s Own Country’ will keep you excited and craving for more. If you are planning to visit Kerala this monsoon, time your travel to not miss out on the bewitching Kerala Boat Race! People from across the world visit the state to see the grandeur of these events!

Kerala Boat Race, also referred to as ‘Vallam Kali’ is a traditional race that is usually conducted during the Malayalam month of ‘Chingam’. In the English Calendar, Chingam will be in the months of August and September. The race is held on the Kerala backwaters that get replenished with the onset of the rainy season. A long boat with a body that twists like a snake – ‘Vallam’ is used to compete with the opponents. Owing to the shape of the boat, this race is also popular as the ‘Kerala Snake Boat Race’.

A group of strong men take up the oars and settle on the boats. They aim to invest their full strength to row and reach the finishing line before their opponents. The palpable energy and the uplifting spirits of the people make Kerala Boat Race the most sought-after event in the Southern States.

What is the Snake Boat Race?

The Kerala Boat Race or Snake Boat Race is not just a sport or recreational activity.
Kerala Snake Boat Race

The Kerala Boat Race or Snake Boat Race is not just a sport or recreational activity. It signifies the happiness of Keralities and showcases their unity and community spirit. It is a way in which the people thank nature – both land and water – for keeping them prosperous and happy. Think of the race as a vibrant regional celebration!

The long snake boats look like the canoe boats you see on rivers and beaches. However, their ends twist like a snake and the other-worldly decorations make them look immensely gorgeous. They are called ‘Chundanvallams’ in Malayalam. Snake boats have a length of about 100 feet and can hold about 100 men. Some boats also have a capacity of holding about 150 men.

Each boat represents a team of 4 navigators, about 25 singers, and a total of 100-125 men rowing the structure. As the men row in unison, the people outside and the talented vocals on the ship sing the ‘boat song’ or ‘Vanchipattu’. This adds to the glorious festive ambiance and motivates the rowers.

During the Kerala Boat race, you will have to squeeze your way in and find a spot on the banks of the backwaters to get a glimpse of the competing champions. An overwhelmingly large crowd is sure to gather on this specific day!

Which is the Famous Kerala Boat Race?

Well, there are four main Snake Boat Races that take place every year in the state. All of them are equally famous, renowned and never fail to entertain the masses.

1 – Champakulam Kerala Boat Race

Champakulam Boat Race is one of the oldest snake boat races to be organized in God’s Own Country.
Champakulam Kerala Boat Race

Champakulam Boat Race is one of the oldest snake boat races to be organized in God’s Own Country. In 1545 AD, the royal priests suggested Maharaja Devanarayana build a temple and install Lord Krishna’s idol in it. Initially, the idol which was brought was considered inauspicious and this was replaced with a sacred one from Karinkulam Temple. The King, his entourage, and villagers brought the holy idol in a grand procession of boats and installed the idol. To celebrate this event, Champakulam Moolam Boat Race is organized and hailed by the entire state of Kerala.

On the day of the race, people gather and greet each other. There is a huge feast with traditional food and ‘prasadam’ offered to Lord Krishna. Only after this will the race begin with thousands of people cheering for their favorite snake boat. This is one of the boat races that happens before the Chingam month begins.

Date: 3rd July 2023
Location: Champakulam – Alappuzha (Alleppey)

2 – Nehru Trophy Boat Race

The Nehru Trophy Boat Race is named after the first prime Minister of India - Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru.
Nehru Trophy Boat Race

The Nehru Trophy Boat Race is named after the first prime Minister of India – Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. It is conducted on the 2nd Saturday of the month of August, and lakhs of people come to witness this event. There is a beautiful story associated with this Kerala Boat Race. In the year 1952, Nehru visited Alappuzha, and that’s when the first race was held to show him a glimpse of the region’s traditional practices. He was so involved in the event that he ignored the security protocols and leapt into the winning boat! He traveled to the jetty while interacting with the champions.

The ex-PMO later sent a Silver Trophy shaped like a snake boat to Kerala and appreciated their unity and way of living. This is the same trophy that has been changing hands from one champion snake boat/team to the other every year.

Aranmula Boat Race is dedicated to the deity – Lord Krishna in the Sree Parthasarathy Temple of Aranmula. It is organized on the river Pamba, and the snake boats used for this event are called the ‘Palliyodams’. Their design is a little different from the snake boats you’d see in the Nehru trophy or the Champakulam Boat Race. These canoe structures are made of adjoining bamboo, and people believe that Lord Krishna himself gave the idea to build this marvellous structure. According to the legend, God appeared on the shores of Aranmula on a raft made out of six bamboo placed adjacently.

The trained warriors who row the ships work on their physical strength for months before diving into the race. Here, you will see that the Boats are being rowed in unison, and they almost look like they are traveling together. The people gather to cheer and celebrate the traditional practices of the region.

Gathering the courage, they started off on their snake boats and noticed an idol of Lord Subramanya there! Seeing it as a divine blessing, they installed the idol in an auspicious place and to date, worship God for good health and prosperity.

Every year, a three-day event with boats coming from different villages of Kerala is celebrated to commemorate the installation of the idol. The team spirit of the participants coupled with the excitement of the crowd makes this one of the best Kerala boat race that you must visit!
