The origin of Mattur Village

Mattur Village is on the banks of the Tunga River and offers just the right environment for those who crave peace, tranquillity and serenity. Centuries ago, the charming of Mattur’s nature attracted scholars and Brahmins of different communities to settle in the place. The ambience is perfect for indulging in spiritual activities and religious practices. The village was occupied by Brahmins who came from the Shimoga district and also the Sankethi Brahmins who migrated from Kerala. Afterwards, farmers, labourers, part-time workers and other people from the surrounding regions of Karnataka. 

Slowly, a budding community and an entire civilisation were established on the banks of the Tunga River and Mattur village took shape. There are no historical records that give us the exact date or year when Mattur Village was established. However, the village likely came into existence around the time when the Brahmins were migrating from one place to another to promote Vedic learning and traditions.

Sanskrit in Mattur Village

Before the 1980s, the people of Mattur Village spoke ‘Kannada’ which is the regional language of the Karnataka state. Also, the Sankethi Brahmins had a language of their own, a mix of Kannada, Malayalam, Tamil and Telugu. This was because of their frequent migration and relocation. They called their language ‘Sankethi’. But, Sankethi Brahmins were the ones who actively spoke in Sanskrit and also chanted the mantras and hymns. They studied the Vedas and religious scriptures in the language. 

Over time, people began to believe that Sanskrit was a language that only the upper caste communities like the Brahmins could use. Because of this disparity, people criticised the language and associated it with discrimination. This changed when the priest of the Pejawar Mutt persuaded the villagers to learn Sanskrit irrespective of their societal status because the language had nothing to do with this hierarchy. It started off when people began learning, conversing and understanding the Sanskrit language for at least two hours a day. Within 10 days, everyone was able to converse or at least understand the language without any difficulty. 

After the 1980s, schools, institutions and Sanskrit centres were established in Mattur village for the locals or anyone to come by and learn the language. 

Sanskrit and academics in Mattur Village

The children in Mattur Village learn Sanskrit as their first language, English as their second language and any regional language as their third language. Usually, Kannada is the language that they opt for after Sanskrit and English. At the age of 10, they begin their learning of the Vedas and Puranas in the Sanskrit language. You will need to pay a nominal entry fee, anywhere between INR 50 to INR 100 near the forest department entry check post and park your vehicles to the side. Then, you must embark on a 4-kilometre trek to reach the location.

The water here falls from a height of 300 feet into a not-so-deep pond. It is possible to wade through the water on the rocky pond bed but it is good to be cautious as the algae present may make the short walk slippery.  

4 – Jogigundi Falls

Jogigundi Falls is named after a sage who used to come here to meditate near the caves in the dense forests. The place is about 4 kilometres away from Agumbe village and travellers need to trek the last 1 kilometre to reach the waterfalls.

Also, this waterfall is unlike the ones we have discussed so far. It doesn’t fall from a height but comes out of a cave that runs through the hills. The water then falls into a natural pool where you can dip your feet and take a swim. 

5 – Barkana Falls

People who are exploring the dense rainforests of the Agumbe region can witness the Barkana Falls from a distance. This is the 10th highest waterfall in India and is formed by the fall of the Sita River.

It is in the middle of the dense forests and adrenaline junkies can certainly take up the challenge of traversing through the tough terrains of the rainforest to get stunning views of the waterfall. It is way more mesmerising to see Barkana Falls in its full glory post the monsoon season. 

6 – Kunchikal falls

About 50 kilometres away from the Agumbe village is Kunchikal Falls. It is one of the highest waterfalls in India descending from a height of 455 metres. It is formed from the fall of the Varahi River and is a multi-tier waterfall that offers enchanting views after the monsoon season. However, it is present in the restricted zone of the rainforests.

The Varahi Hydro Power Plant is close to the falls and that is the reason you must seek special permission from the forest department to reach the place. Despite the permits, the place attracts a lot of wildlife photographers, nature lovers and trekkers. 

7 – Kundadri hills

Kundadri Hills are a must-visit place near Agumbe village. It is a huge monolithic rock that is surrounded by dense forests and offers breathtaking views of the Western Ghats. June to September – This is the peak monsoon season in Agumbe village. The trekking trails will be closed and permits will not be issued to reach the restricted zones of the forest. By Air

The nearest airport to Agumbe village is in Mangalore, about 95 kms from the valley. You will find local buses and taxi services that will take you from Mangalore airport to Agumbe. 

By Rail

Udupi Railway Station is the nearest rail route to Agumbe village. It is about 50 kms from the place. Local government buses are available to take you from Udupi to Agumbe. It is better to take these buses than hire a cab or taxi from Udupi to the valley.

By Road

October to January and June to September are good months to trek to Kumara Parvatha. Summers are scorchingly harsh in the south, hence impossible to trek. Winters are quite pleasant in the area with thick mist and dreamy fog surrounding the forest and the trail and also Kumara Parvatha makes for a good monsoon trek.

How To Get There

• Road: If you’re coming from Coorg, the best option will be to take a  cab to Kukke Subramanya or Pushpagiri Wildlife Sanctuary. While coming from Bangalore, take a cab or a bus. It takes around 2 to 3 hours from Coorg to reach the trek starting point at Kukke Temple and takes an overnight journey to reach from Bangalore.
• Flight: Mangalore airport is around 150 kilometres from trek point.
• Rail: Mysore and Hassan railway stations are the closest to Kumara Parvatha. Try Hubli or Karwar Express or Bangalore-Mysore Express.

Trekking Route

Day 1

Trek begins from a little distance after Kukke Subramanya Temple, marked by a signboard. The trail is easily visible and for the first few kilometres, there will be a moderately difficult climb through dense forests which will lead to grasslands. At Bhatt’s House, you can take a short break and then proceed further. Take permission from Forest House for camping as it is prohibited to camp from beyond this point. Camp overnight.

Day 2

Battere Mane or Bhatt’s Place

An early morning start will lead you to Kallu Mandapa beside a stream. The hike to Shesh Parvatha is the toughest part of the trek. After Shesh Parvatha, the trail goes downwards to a clearing, after which there is an uphill hike leading to huge boulders. A rocky stretch leads to meadows and then to the summit. The view includes the vast expanse of Madikeri.

Descent & Return

After a break, start your descent through the same trail, takes 3 hours to reach Forest Office and then another couple of hours to reach the base. Upon descent, stay overnight at Kukke Subramanya or head to Coorg or  Bangalore and make your return journey.

There is another route that leads to the summit which is from Beedhalli in Somwarpet. This trail is slightly more difficult than Kukke Subramanya trail but has an appeal nonetheless.

It is a longer trek, thus it is advisable to trek with an experience trek guide or a group trek.  

The dense Shola forest will provide cover throughout. Many climbers take this trail to ascend and descend via Kukke Subramanya.

• Travel: A round trip in a cab from Coorg to Kukke Subramanya costs around Rs 3600. A 3 day round trip from Bangalore to Kukke in a self-drive car costs around Rs. 8000 to Rs 9000. Bus fare from Coorg to Kukke Subramanya is Rs 100, while from Bangalore to the bus fare is Rs 600.
• Food: There is basic food available at Battere Mane (Bhatt’s House) for Rs. 150 & more.
• Accommodation: There is a fee of Rs 200 to be paid at the Forest House for overnight camping at Battere Mane.
• Kumara Parvatha Trek Packages: Homestay packages are plenty. They provide authentic food and guided information for as low as Rs. 1300 per person.

• Drop off your overnight tents at Forest Reserve Park & pick them back up enroute.
  
• Carry basic toiletries, sunglasses, a jacket if trekking in winter.
  
• The trail is arduous, you have to be physically fit to finish it.
  
• There will be toilet tents if the trek organizer provides it, or else expect to relieve yourself in nature. There are toilets in Battere Mane.
  
• The challenging trek is not suitable for the elderly or those with a heart condition, asthma or blood pressure.

Day 2: Head to Mysore

The Mysore Palace

The drive to Mysore will take you around two hours to complete. We suggest you leave Bangalore early in the morning so that you get most of the second day to spend in Mysore. You can club your visit to Mysore with Coorg since the two places aren’t that too far away from each other.

Make a stop at Channapatna

For a unique experience, on your way to Mysore, you can stop over at Channapatna, a village known for making toys. There are many amazing toys and puppets that you can see here.

If you do not want to drive down, there are trains available from the Krantivira Sangolli Rayanna railway station to Mysore Junction railway station.

The ideal time to spend in Mysore is half a day as there are only a few places that you can see. From there, you should move to Coorg to complete your 3 day trip in Karnataka.

Things to Do in Mysore

• Sightseeing in Mysore  

Visit the Srirangapatna Sri Ranganathaswamy temple and then head out to the Dariya Daulat Palace. From here, you can visit the Mysuru Palace, and then do some shopping in Mysore. Don’t forget to pick up sweets and spices, Mysore has amazing varieties.

From there drive down to Chamundi Hill, where you will come across two stunning Dravidian temples, including the famous Bull Temple.  

Day 2: Head to Coorg

From Chamundi Hill, you drive down to Coorg. There are no trains along this route. If you have driven down from Bangalore to Mysore, then it is great, but if you have not, you can rent a car in Mysore to get to Coorg.

The journey to Coorg should take you around 2 hours, so you should be there by evening, just in time to watch the sunset from the Brahmagiri Peak. Spend a few hours at this peak and then head to your hotel and rest.

Day 3: Spend The Last Day in Coorg

Spend your last day in Coorg, it will probably be the best one, especially if you love adventure sports.

Things to Do in Coorg

1. Visit the Falls

Start your day early and head straight to the Abbey Falls to enjoy a bit of nature and fun. You can also go to the Iruppu Falls if you wish.

2. Ride an Elephant at the Dubare Elephant Camp.

Another must-do activity in Coorg is riding an elephant at the Dubare Elephant Camp. The experience is great and you’ll get to pass through the banks of the River Cauvery where you’ll see crocodiles, Gaurs and a few other animals.

3. Spend time at the Raja’s Seat

Raja’s Seat is a great place to end your sightseeing trip in Coorg. This lookout point in the hills offers stunning views of the green valley. Make sure to watch the sunset from this point and pay a visit to the garden nearby that is spread out with pretty flowers and musical fountains.

4. Enjoy Local Delicacies in Coorg

Coorg has a delightful local cuisine. A few popular dishes served at restaurants in Coorg are bamboo shoot Curry, their own version of pork and Kadumbutu which is steamed dumplings. Apart from this, you can get Indian, Chinese and even European-Continental food in Coorg.

This ends your three day trip in Karnataka. To get back to Bangalore, you could either drive down straight to Bangalore or go to Mysore and from there go by train to Bangalore.
