He used these spells to turn himself into an animal and get back to the human form again. While he used these spells to protect the village, he also stole the agricultural gains of the other villagers. Upon finding this, another sorcerer was curious. He instantly asked the first sorcerer to share the mantra for shape-shifting practice. Upon receiving the denial, he cast a spell on the first sorcerer, leading to a rivalry of spells. This rivalry led the first sorcerer to feel the need to hide magic spells and witchcraft practices. He went deep inside the jungles of Mayond and buried the secrets. He didn’t want the secrets to be out in the wrong hands.

Sattriya Dance originated in the Satras of Majuli island. It is a major art form in the Ekasarana Dharma or neo-Vaishnavism introduced by Sankardeva in the 15th and 16th centuries. In the year 2000, Sattriya Dance was also accepted as one of the 8 main classical dance forms in India.

How to reach Majuli Island?

By Air

Tourists coming from other Indian cities other than Guwahati will have to book their flights to Guwahati first. Then they will easily find flights to Rowriah Airport, Jorhat. From Jorhat, you can hire a cab or use the local transport to reach the ferry point that has boats travelling to Majuli Island.

By Rail

Jorhat Railway Station is the closest point to Majuli Island. If your region doesn’t have direct trains to Jorhat, you can stop at Guwahati and take a train to Jorhat from there.

By Rail

Lumding Junction Railway Station is the closest to Haflong and you will find trains running between Shillong, Guwahati, and Lumding. The people living in other parts of India can reach Guwahati first and then travel toward Haflong. 

By Road
